Harrow, Ontario – If you own a pinball machine from the 60s, 70s, or 80s, a Harrow-based company has an exciting innovation just for you! In a world where vintage pinball machines have become increasingly collectible, especially as popular additions to man-caves and she-sheds, Viper Pinball is taking these classics to a whole new level with the power of sound.
Unlike modern pinball machines with custom soundtracks and voice callouts, classic machines from the 20th century often relied on simple chimes or early digital sound boards. Viper Pinball has developed a solution: the Viper Pinball Sound System (VPSS) Version 2. This new digital sound system can add up to 64 music or sound effect tracks, transforming the auditory experience of vintage pinball machines and adding fresh excitement to these timeless games.
Viper Pinball has already enhanced machines like the classic Elton John’s Captain Fantastic and a Ted Nugent themed pinball machine from 1975, enriching gameplay with hit songs from the respective artists. “Sound is so important,” says Viper Pinball owner Rob Whent. “Adding music or voice callouts to these classic machines really breathes new life into them. Games with the VPSS are played much more often than games without it. The best part is that this modification doesn’t permanently alter the original game. When the VPSS is turned off, the game plays as it originally did.”
The VPSS system features a Raspberry Pi computer with custom connectors. To optimize the custom software development, Viper Pinball leverages artificial intelligence to generate code in Python and uses generative AI to troubleshoot and add innovative features. “We can also add new combination awards and even trigger video segment playback for specific achievements,” explains Viper Pinball engineer Matt Daviau.
Viper Pinball has been officially restoring and repairing pinball machines across Canada since 2017, but Whent’s love for pinball spans over 25 years. “Originally, I had to learn how to fix my own games, many of which were purchased when Fast Eddys, a local pinball arcade, closed down,” Whent shares. “There are over 3,500 parts in a pinball machine, and like any sophisticated piece of equipment, they need regular maintenance.”
